Strengthening Cross-Border Cooperation between Italy and Slovenia: My IVY Reporter Experience

Hello everyone! My name is Kaja, and I am currently volunteering in Trieste at the Managing Authority of the Interreg Italy–Slovenia VI-A Programme as an IVY Reporter.

Why did I decide to join Interreg Italy-Slovenia?

I am from Gorizia, Italy, and I am part of the Slovenian national minority in Italy. I grew up between two cultures and have always perceived the area I come from as truly borderless. This strong connection to both Italy and Slovenia has inspired me to better understand the ties between the two countries and the role that programmes such as Interreg can play in promoting cross-border cooperation. These programmes are especially important in strengthening climate change adaptation, promoting sustainable tourism and social inclusion, as well as resolving legal and bureaucratic obstacles between border countries.

My role as an IVY

I am part of the wonderful Communications Office, a team of highly motivated, dedicated, and creative young women. One of my main tasks is reviewing communication materials submitted by the projects, making sure they correctly and effectively promote the Programme. I also support smooth communication with stakeholders and beneficiaries, help organise workshops, and contribute by writing articles and publishing materials on the Programme website. Additionally, I support the organisation of the Students4Cooperation high school competition, create content for social media, and assist in revising the Programme’s publications.

Highlights of my experience

As an IVY, I have had the opportunity to participate in project closing events and see firsthand the results they have achieved. For example, I attended the concluding event of the BEE2GETHER project, where I had the chance to visit the electronic beehives financed by the Programme. This opportunity clearly showed me the tangible impact that Interreg Programmes can have at the local level. I also participated in the 8th Monitoring Committee of the Interreg Italy–Slovenia VI-A Programme, held in Ljubljana. This experience allowed me to better understand how the Programme is managed and to meet both Italian and Slovenian stakeholders.

I have been part of the #interregitaslo team for almost five months now, and I am very satisfied with my experience so far. My tasks are very diverse, and working with such an amazing team makes the experience even more enjoyable, especially when we create reels together (check our latest reels on Instagram @interregitaslo)

Overall, this experience has been both professionally and personally enriching. Being part of a cross-border cooperation programme that truly makes a difference has strengthened my belief in the value of Cohesion Policy.

I would recommend trying it yourself! Apply to become an IVY and help promote the benefits of cross-border cooperation.

Thank you, IVY and AEBR, for this unforgettable journey.
