Adapting Alpine Cities to Climate Change

I came to IVY looking for a way to make a positive impact. When I heard a volunteer discuss how the project had changed how she sees the city, I knew I had found the right place.

I am currently an IVY Project Partner at COMMONAIR, an Interreg Alpine Space project led by Politecnico di Torino. Our main focus is monitoring and improving how people experience heat in their neighborhoods. Europe at large is affected by climate change more than average, and the Alpine Region is one of the fastest heating regions in the continent, and the latest heatwaves have shown us just how heavy its impact can be.

This is why the project feels so important: I am helping four different cities (Torino, Grenoble, Zurich and Vienna) build the technical infrastructure and collective knowledge to adapt to these conditions. Although I can only be in one place at a time, I have already visited two partner cities, and I constantly keep up with the others’ initiatives.

When I help install new measurement stations, and see my own city adopting measures to improve climate adaptation, I know I am contributing towards improving cities for everyone.
