Hello everyone, I’m Edoardo Bogetto, I’m 23 yo and I’m volunteering for and cooperating with Metropolitan City of Turin on “GE.CO” (Gestione Ecologica dei Conflitti). “GE.CO” is an Interreg ALCOTRA project that is located in Italy/France border, in the Hautes-Alpes territory, Parco del Monviso and some other valleys included in the province of Turin. The aim of the project is the conservation and protection of two very relevant animal species living in the Alps: Salamandra lanzai and Salmo ghigii. “GE.CO” is trying to reduce the conflicts regarding the use of resources between land users, to promote better knowledge of transboundary biodiversity and the impacts of climate change.
Me, as an IVY volunteer, I’m working on the conservation of the Mediterranean brown trout (Salmo ghigii) in all the rivers included in the territory of Metropolitan City of Turin.
I’ve started my IVY experiene in April, and so far we are working straight to the point to protect this endangered and very rare fish! Salmo ghigii is a salmonid that loves very cold and oxygenated waters, so my team and I are trying to preserve this fragile environment monitoring the impact of dams, water withdrawals, weirs and crosspieces present in the watercourses involved in the project.
What have I learnt in my IVY experience so far? Well, a big component in the work that we do everyday is to communicate with small realities of mountain municipalities and with municipal bodies regarding the current conditions of the Alpine watercourses, therefore a good part of communication is involved within all the activities carried out by my team and I. Another fundamental characteristic for the success of this project is the knowledge of the local territory, therefore a great ability acquired is certainly a good knowledge of the territorial realities within the competence of the Metropolitan City of Turin.
What do I appreciate the most of my IVY experience? As a naturalist and river lovers, I really enjoy working in the outdoor, and a big part of the activity that I carry out is field work (such as detections of structures that could negatively affect the survival of the Mediterranean brown trout in the rivers), so I’m really happy and satisfied about this experience so far.
