Sziasztok mindenki! My volunteering experience during the pandemic
Greetings from Budapest! My name´s Katerina and I come from the Czech Republic. I moved to Hungary more than one month ago and started my very first volunteering experience. And I must say – so good so far!
I work as an IVY volunteer at the Danube Transnational Programme which is a financing instrument of the European Territorial Cooperation. I am the second hand of the programme´s communication officer and my supervisor in one Mirjana Vidanovic who helps me with completing my daily tasks. I am in charge of DTP social networks such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, I write blog posts on the programme´s website and mostly I try to help our projects´ leaders with communication issues. Since I study Political Science and Journalism at university back in my home country, the job at DTP gives me a great opportunity to put the theoretical knowledge into practise.
So you may ask, how is the situation around the pandemic and volunteering then? Due to Covid-19 outbreak, there are some safety measures that my kind colleagues and I need to follow. For instance, most of us work from home at the moment and communicate via online meetings and e-mails. However, that doesn´t really change the fact that I am enjoying my stay abroad to the fullest.
One of the best things about my abroad experience is definitely Budapest itself. The Hungarian capital is a vibrant city full of international students and young adults. There are so many amazing spots worth visiting including the lesser-known Elizabeth Lookout, a historical lookout tower situated on János Hill nearby that offers a view over the Danube River running through the city. One of my aims for the next months is to try to discover all the city´s hidden gems as well.
To everyone who is having doubts about joining a volunteering programme - definitely go for it! I completely understand it may seem that there are many unknown challenges in front of you.. but these are only waiting for you to rock them! Moreover, if you have any questions related to my volunteering experience, living abroad, Hungary, or just need a little motivational kick to start, get in touch with me. I will be more than glad to help you. You can find me on Instagram (milotova_k).
