Taking care of terns is also Cohesion Policy
Hello! My name is Ana and I’m from Croatia. I have joined the IVY team over a month ago. I volunteer at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb. My time here so far has been made very enjoyable by the great people here. They are easy to communicate with and create a good working atmosphere. We are working on the Interreg Si-Hr project ČIGRA with the goal of conserving and stabilizing Common tern populations on the rivers Drava and Sava.
Every other day or so we drive to the Siromaja lake near Zagreb, where there is with a manmade platform anchored in the middle. The platform serves as a nesting place for this tern colony. On the platform we monitor their behaviour, clutch number and size as well as nestling behaviour, number and size. It’s adorable to see all those little chicks running around, to hear their parents calling them for dinner and feel the atmosphere of the colony.
Other than the monitoring, we organize workshops for elementary school students. Our goal was to educate them about the problems that the colony is facing and what everyone can do to help. They were very eager to learn and had prepared a lot of questions. It was great to see young generations to be so curious and willing to participate. Two of such workshops were held and each was packed with good energy.
For me, this first month of volunteering just flew by. For the next 5 months, there is still a lot of work to do and I look forward to it all. I would recommend volunteering through IVY to anyone looking for a great opportunity for sharing knowledge and learning something new!
